Brocathalon FAQ's

plusWhat's this "Brocathalon" all about?

The Brocathalon promises runners from all over the city and country "the best that Pittsburgh has to offer in less than 5k", incorporating challenges that highlight the city's best food and cherished icons. Plus, Steelers Super Bowl Champions Jeff Hartings and Justin Hartwig will emcee the event and greet runners at the finish line. And, it's just really fun.

plusThe event has "Bro" in the title - is this only for guys?

Nope, you don't have to be a "Bro" to participate. We encourage women to come out and be a part of the race just like we encourage women to read and contribute to the Bro Council website. Plus, no one wants to go to a party with all guys!

plusIs this event only for hardcore runners?

Are you feeling a little out of shape? We have a shortcut on the trail for the people who want to cheat the course. We know that not everyone wants to run an entire 3 mile race without stopping. But don't worry: even if you take the shortcut, you will still be able to eat the chicken wings on the course. Score one for the lazy people.

plusWho decides the best of the city?

We either have a giant 14 GHz computer that calculates the best of the city using an advanced algorithm or we pick them ourselves based on our knowledge of the city. We'll leave that up to you to decide what you think really happens.

plusWhat happens after you finish

You won't want to go home. Seriously. We'll have entertainment, Super Bowl champions, and a party waiting at the finish line. Not only will you want to stay for that, but we encourage you to invite friends.

plusWhy should I do this?

Because you'll have fun, impress your friends, and be a part of the best run in the history of the world. Well, at least we think it is. Plus, if you're not from the city this will give you a chance to enjoy the best that Pittsburgh has to offer. And you're even helping out some great charities too.

plusWhat do I get with registration?

You get an awesome t-shirt, a bag full of free swag, and the chance to participate in all of the challenges on the course. Plus, you'll have access to the post-race party with Super Bowl champions, great entertainment, and prizes. Why haven't you signed up already? That sounds amazing.

plusWhat is Bro Council?

Bro Council is a website for men that has all the content guys love, plus wives and girlfriends love it since we keep it clean. We have a news site, Bro Council Videos, advice, and you can even become a Bro Council member. We've also been voted the "Best Website In The Burgh" by the readers of Pittsburgh magazine. So yes, we are the best website in Pittsburgh and we're putting on an event that celebrates the Best in Pittsburgh...pretty cool huh?

plusDoes this benefit a charity?

Of course! We give a portion of all the proceeds the site receives throughout the year to deserving charities as part of our business plan. And for the Brocathalon we're partnering with The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation and another charity to be named soon to provide a portion of the proceeds to help those causes. We love charity at Bro Council - the founding members even met while working at a non-profit.

plusWhere do I pick up my packet?

We'll have two locations prior to race day and will announce them as the Brocathalon approaches. Don't worry, we'll keep them near good food places so you'll be able to stop for dinner to "carbo-load" before the race.

plusWhat should I wear?

Pants. You should definitely come wearing some kind of pants. You know what? Shorts will work too. Just wear what you normally would to run. As long as you have something covering your lower half.

plusCan my friends come if they don't want to run?

Of course. We'll even be announcing a way for them to get into the after party soon. Stay tuned.

plusWhat's the deal with the teams?

Everybody wants to be a part of a team right? Teams give you a chance to hang out with your friends and share the fun of the Brocathalon.

plusIs the run timed?

We like to keep things simple at Bro Council so we aren't timing the Brocathalon. Why worry about your time when you can just enjoy the race instead? Yeah, that's definitely a better way to go.

plusIs the race open to all ages?

Of course. The Brocathalon is family friendly so you can bring your kids, your parents, and your grandparents. If you have creepy uncles, please keep them at home.

plusIs the race refundable?

The race is not refundable, but you can transfer your registration to someone else. But if you do that, just know that you're probably going to be overcome with a sense of jealousy when race day happens. Prepare yourself.

plusCan I volunteer?

Of course! We need volunteers to help this event run smoothly, and we appreciate the help. You may even get to be one of our zombies...contact us for info!

plusWhere can I sign up?

You can sign up through our secure registration page here. You're almost done with this FAQ, so you should just go ahead and sign up while you're thinking of it. We wouldn't want you to forget and then have to feel the pains of being left out the day of the race.

plusIt says "The Best of Pittsburgh In Less Than 5K" - how long is this run?

The course is slightly less than 5K. For those of you who aren't familiar with the metric system, that's a little less than 3.1 miles. We also have a cheaters course for those of you who think that 5K is even too long. Don't worry, we (probably) won't make fun of you.

plusAre pets allowed?

We love dogs at Bro Council, and that's why we don't allow them on the course. We wouldn't want anything to happen to them. When they see all the fun that is happening, they may just take off to explore and leave you alone to wallow in your lost friendship. And for the sake of fairness, we can't allow other animals on the course either.

plusWhat's with the name? A "Brocathalon"?

Good question...let's break it down! The run was started by Bro Council, hence the "Bro" in the title. As for the Cathalon part...well, we combined the words decathlon, marathon, 5K, and adventure run into Google translate and somehow "cathalon" popped out. No word on where the number "5" went.
